BariEDucated: An Integrated Health Guide for Dietitians and Behavioral Health Specialists Caring for Bariatric Surgery Patients

A must-read comprehensive guide to collaborative care amongst bariatric professionals, BariEDucated draws on the authors’ decades of cumulative experience and long-term working relationship. Geared towards mental health professionals, registered dietitians, and other bariatric treatment team members, it focuses on the nutritional and psychological aspects of pre-and post-operative care of metabolic and bariatric surgery patients. Special attention is given to eating disorders in the hopes of bridging the gap between professionals who treat bariatric patients and healthcare providers who specialize in eating disorder treatment. The importance of compassion, communication, and collaboration is emphasized, as the authors firmly believe these key components enrich the client experience and improve outcomes. An entire section of the book is devoted to comprehensive aftercare, as the authors feel post-operative programming is foundational to patients’ long-term success. Whether you are a seasoned clinician or just getting started in the field, it is a resource for all aspects of integrated health for those who care for the bariatric population.

Meet the Authors

BariEDucated was founded by Kelly Broadwater and Chaundra Evans, two integrated health experts with extensive experience working collaboratively with bariatric patients. We hope to share our combined knowledge in the areas of bariatric behavioral health and bariatric nutrition, offer guidance on therapeutic communication to improve collaborative outcomes within the integrative health team, and provide strategies for developing robust aftercare programming.

We are passionate about bridging the gap between bariatrics and eating disorders, as we realize that foundational knowledge and nuanced information on eating disorders are mainly absent from today’s bariatric-related psychological, nutritional, and medical training. If you specialize in eating disorders and are less educated about bariatrics, we hope our shared knowledge will empower you to provide compassionate care to these unique clients and their specialized circumstances.

We welcome the opportunity to help you and your organization grow professionally.
